Information for Parents and Carers

About us

Student experience is core to what we do here at the University of Northampton. We provide a personalised learning experience for our students, and our academic teaching brings real world experiences and insights to student learning.

How can you help?

Progression into Higher Education is an exciting time, but we understand the breadth of information available can be overwhelming; we have created a useful Glossary of academic terms for parents and carers to support students heading to university.

Discover more about us as a university.

  • We would encourage students, parents and carers research into courses and universities, the earlier the better. UCAS is a great place to start.
  • Courses can vary between universities so make sure the course is explored in detail, with consideration given to assessment methods and modules available.
  • Help to proof-read the application, Personal Statement and any supporting documents of the student.

Get some extra information on how parents and carers can help students by visiting the UniGuide website.

Teachers and Advisers

Do you work in a school or college? Find out more on our Schools and Colleges page.

Foster Carers and Personal Advisors

If you are supporting any children in care or care leavers at the moment, our Care Leavers and Estranged Students Hub provides plenty of information on the support available to them.

International Students

If you are a parent of an International student or an adviser, see our Guidance for Parents and Advisers page for information about how you can help your son or daughter make the most of their time studying in Northampton.

  • From 5 July 2024, you can apply for a course through UCAS Clearing if:

    • you already have your exam results, but you have no offers
    • you didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
    • you didn’t receive any offers (or none that you wanted to accept)
    • you’ve declined your firm place using ‘decline my place’ in UCAS Hub
    • you have not made any applications to UCAS this year
  • The majority of undergraduate degrees in the UK are applied for through UCAS. Applications are online and made up of various steps; it is also useful to know what happens once an application has been submitted and the key deadlines. Visit the UCAS Parents and Guardians page for more information.

The University of Northampton accepts all major Level 3 qualifications, such as: A Levels, BTEC, Access, CACHE, and many more. UCAS displays a full list of qualifications accepted for each course on their website.

There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding Level 3 qualifications and university entry requirements. At our institution, providing the Level 3 qualification e.g. BTEC is equivalent to three A Levels, students applying with these qualifications will be considered completely equal in the eyes of our admissions team.

Join us at an Open Day

A common question that is asked around university applications is do parents go to open days. We encourage parents and carers to also attend an Open Day when you are able to. Open Days can be a real benefit to alleviate some of the concerns the students or yourselves may have about university.

At our Open Days, we have dedicated sessions for Personal Statements, Student Finance, and Employability. You can speak face-to-face with the university staff who deal with these specific areas to ask any and all questions you may have.

To explore the opportunities available at the University of Northampton; you can register for one of our upcoming Open Days.

  • Student Finance

Our fees and funding page lays out all the facts on finance for our institution; but you may also find it useful to visit Student Finance England for more general information about applying for loans and bursaries.

Join our Financial Guidance Team for Student Finance talks at Open Days too. They are available at money@northampton.ac.uk to answer any questions you may have once a student has applied to us.

We also provide a wide range or further financial support in the form of scholarships and bursaries.

    Part time work

Our Student Futures team is available to students throughout their degree to make it easier for them to find a job when they graduate. We also have an employment agency within the university, specifically for students. Unitemps advertise a variety of roles including the opportunity to work as a Student Ambassador, representing the University at various events such as Open Days and school visits.

  • Student Accommodation

We have a wide range of rooms, on and off campus, to suit any preference or budget, including halls of residence especially for those students carrying out placements.
