Your University Experience

Why did you decide to study at the University of Northampton?

I was attracted to the University because of the availability of the two-year intensive law degree.

What are your career goals/aspirations?

Following completion of my studies at the University, I would like to qualify as a solicitor. I am currently exploring different options of the area of law which I would like to work in. I am interested in Family Law and hope to be able to explore this area first.

How do you think your studies will help your career or personal development when you graduate?

Completion of a law degree is the first stage of the process in order for me to be able to one day qualify as a solicitor. Exploring areas of law which I haven’t yet had any experience in will help me to have a wider understanding of the law and legal issues.

Which, if any, skills and knowledge/understanding gained on your degree do you feel will be most useful in your future career?

The skills which I’m sure will assist me with my future career are those relating to report writing, understanding legal principles established in case law, and legal problem-solving skills. As well as building on the communication skills I already have.

In one sentence, what advice would you give to undergraduates interested in this career path or anything you wish you had known earlier?

The Intensive Law LLB is just what it says and can be very time consuming. However, I entered into this course expecting this and being prepared to treat my studies as a full-time job – if you can keep this mentality then you will keep on top of the work. There is lots of reading and note taking required, so make sure you have fine-tuned your skills in this area. Most importantly, start work on assignments as soon as possible following release of the guidance, to give yourself the best opportunity to complete them to the best of your ability and without adding pressure to yourself by leaving it to the last minute.

There is lots of help available, via the Skills Hub and the Student Futures team, so make use of these if you struggle with the writing of assignments.

In ten words, or less how would you summarise your UON experience?

Positive, life changing and the best decision I have ever made!
