I chose to study at the University of Northampton after attending two of their open days. Speaking with various lecturers helped me to fine tune exactly what I was looking to study, and I decided to go with Human Geography, a subject I’d thoroughly enjoyed during GCSE and A-level. Going to the open days made me realise how deep the subject went and I was extremely keen to get going!
I really enjoyed how I was able to express my opinions and feelings on real time issues through my studies – from the housing crisis in the UK at the time, to population trends across the world. The course also offered me an opportunity to get a better understanding of how people live across the world, which really opened my eyes. I feel that I’ve taken my studies into my professional life, and it’s made me a more rounded person.
The skills and knowledge I gained on my degree that are most useful in my current role are time management and organisational skills and these have been vital to my career development. The debating aspect of my degree is also extremely beneficial, as I’m consulting with people daily.
Alongside my studies, I was captain of the men’s first team in football. Running the football team gave me a great sense of pride, but also taught me how to lead and communicate efficiently. It was a lot of hard work and dedication, but extremely worth it. Understanding if you’ve given something your all that’s all you can do, is something that has stuck with me to this day, and I still refer to in the role I’m in now.
If I hadn’t studied at the University of Northampton, I honestly don’t think I’d be in the position I’m in now. The core skills of my job correlate to what I learnt throughout my degree, both curricular and non-curricular, such as leadership, in-depth thinking, accountability of your performance, and a strong personal drive.
I’m very proud of how far I’ve come since leaving university. I’m currently helping Local Authorities across the UK to recruit staff to help their respective teams – whether that’s helping their homelessness or planning legal teams, to name a few. In the future, I plan to grow my own team of consultants and continue our outreach.
The advice I’d give to undergraduates interested in this career path would be if an opportunity to gain more knowledge is presented to you, take it with open arms. My time at UON provided me with a great learning experience and I made lifelong friendships in the process.
