- Current job title: Senior Tissue Viability Nurse, at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.
I chose to study the three-day workshop-style CPD course at the University of Northampton as it’s relevant to my current job role.
I started my career as a registered nurse in an acute hospital ward, covering breast, gynaecology and colorectal surgeries pre and post-operatively. Following that role, I moved into the community setting as a District Nurse and then became a District Nurse Team Leader. I then progressed to my current specialist role as a Senior Tissue Viability Nurse.
The aspects of the course that I particularly enjoyed were the Role of the Vascular Surgeon presentation, a practical session using ABPI doppler equipment and U/S duplex scanner, a practical session using podiatry foam, the diabetic foot presentation, the Dermatology – Malignant Skin Cancers presentation, and Surgical Approaches to Limb Preservation.
All these sessions were so relevant to my specialist role and gave me an insight into a podiatry patient’s perspective and the challenges that they may face.
Overall, taking this course has helped my career development as it allowed me to enhance the knowledge and understanding that I already had around managing the lower limb and foot, as well as enabling me to gain vascular-related knowledge.
The advice I would you give to anyone interested in this career path would be to expect to be continuously learning and developing, if you want to progress in your chosen career pathway in a healthcare setting.
My UON experience was excellent – positive, enjoyable, relevant, friendly, engaging, practical, knowledgeable, interesting, and well-presented.
