Since secondary school I’ve always loved organising events and activities. I enjoy organising events to bring people together and to bring ideas to reality. When reading about the Events Management course at UON, I really liked the fact that we’d get to organise an event each year to apply what we’ve learnt, and I felt that the course would be very practical and offer great experiences.

My advice to anyone thinking about going to university is to take advantage of your time while you study. Do voluntary work, join societies, attend social activities – everything will teach you something and give you experience that you may not realise. Follow your passion and everything will work out.

Some of my course highlights included:

  • First year event – Make a Wish Pub Quiz. Although just a small event, it was the first event we organised while applying what we’d learnt in class
  • Placement year – I got a lot of support from my tutors, and from UON via the Student Futures team, but it was very difficult to find a placement. Luckily my summer internship turned into a placement right before the deadline.

After graduating in 2020, I’m now a successful professional in my chosen field, working as Campaigns and Events Manager at British Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City.

My career highlights:

  • Summer internship at British Academy of Management (2018)
  • Placement year at British Academy of Management as Events Officer (2018-2019)
  • Events and Communications Officer at British Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City (2021)
  • Promotion to Campaigns and Events Manager at British Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City (2023).

Within these, some of my events highlights are:

  • UK Festival in Ho Chi Minh City (September 2023) – my first time leading a public festival at a very central location in the city, attended by around 20,000 people
  • King’s Coronation Garden Party (2023), attended by 350 people. The biggest event we’d ever hosted at the British Consulate venue
  • The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration in Vietnam (2022), for 400 people – one of the biggest events I led during my time with the British Consulate
  • BAM Conference – my first time supporting a big international conference
  • Final year project – Rock for Hope 2020. Our biggest event at university (and the only one that year because of the pandemic)
  • Tet It Up 2020 – an event I organised with the Vietnamese Students Society during my final year. It turned out to be one of the biggest student events, with over 250 attendees. We won the
  • Event of the Year 2019/2020 Award from the UON Students’ Union, and were shortlisted for Local Event of the Year by the National Societies and Volunteering Awards 2020.
