As an international student, several variables influenced my decision to study at UON, but above all, it was the University’s excellent reputation – I heard nothing but positive things about the high calibre of teaching and the encouraging learning environment.
I was confident that I would receive a top-notch education and the available courses were a fantastic fit for my academic interests and professional goals. The course programme ensured a thorough learning experience by striking a balance between academic knowledge and practical abilities, and confirmed my conviction that I would develop the skills I needed to succeed in my line of work.
Working in the field was one of the best parts of the course. Field trips, field experiments, and data gathering activities enabled me to apply the academic principles to real-world settings and gain invaluable experience. These ranged from studying biodiversity in natural habitats, to conducting water quality evaluations in nearby streams, which strengthened the significance of conservation efforts and cultivated a closer relationship with the environment.
As part of my course, I completed a placement at Northamptonshire County Council, which included:
- assessing factors affecting the environment and creating recycling programmes
- maintaining the website by adding new articles on greener recycling methods
- educating families and community members about Reduce, Reuse and Recycling, and making usable items from recycled plastics which children used at schools
- participating in community and professional organisational county meetings
- planning and hosting community service/campaign activities
- creating fundraising strategies tied to the Northamptonshire Waste and Energy education team’s mission, programmes and goals
- maintaining an intensive schedule of inspections transfer and recycling stations around the county.
This placement allowed me to obtain real-world experience and put the theoretical knowledge I had learned in the classroom to use. It also gave me the chance to network and form relationships with experts in the industry, as I was able to pick their brains about best practices and trends, and gain knowledge from their experience. This has proven to be important to my career, by providing me with job opportunities, mentorship, and guidance.
I was given excellent opportunities to build a varied range of employability skills, which not only improved my career chances, but also provided me with the confidence and capabilities required to prosper in any professional context as I felt more independent and self-assured. I had to venture outside my comfort zone and take on new duties, which helped me grow both emotionally and professionally and knowing that I could overcome challenges gave me resilience and self-assurance. My placement also provided me with opportunities to develop unique solutions to problems – whether fixing technological issues, settling conflicts, or overcoming obstacles, I honed my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are essential for success in any professional position.
My tips on getting the most benefit from your placement would be to begin researching opportunities early so you have enough time to consider alternative options, prepare application papers, and find a placement that matches your interests and career aspirations. Whilst at your placement, use networking opportunities, industry events, and career fairs to establish connections, as developing contacts can yield insightful information, sound counsel, and even job prospects. Also, take the initiative and look for ways to contribute, learn, and take on new tasks – ask questions and actively participate in initiatives and activities. Displaying excitement, curiosity, and a willingness to learn will impress superiors and colleagues, so approach your placement with an open mind and accept new experiences and challenges, even if they are outside your comfort zone.
Alongside my studies, I was in the First Love Church Society and Southern African Society. This gave me opportunities for leadership positions, such as planning events, managing teams, or overseeing projects. Employers respect the ability to manage people, time, and resources effectively, which is demonstrated by taking on leadership duties. I also developed skills in dispute resolution, effective communication, and utilising team members’ abilities to accomplish shared objectives, which are vital in any professional environment.
After completing my studies, I obtained an entry-level job in a respectable company in my field. I developed my skills, gained practical experience, and proved myself to be a valuable team member. I also looked for opportunities to further my professional development, including getting more certifications or advanced training. Finally, I developed a strong network of professional contacts, mentors, and supporters who offered advice and encouragement.
I hope to keep growing professionally and assuming leadership positions in the future. I want to look for ways to continually improve and progress, including executive education classes, advanced degrees, or specialised training programmes. I’d like to share my knowledge and experience by getting involved in industry events and professional organisations within my sector, and ultimately, I want to have a significant influence on my industry and support innovation and constructive change.
My UON experience was one of transformative learning, diverse chances, lifetime connections, and personal development.
