Why did you choose your course at UON?

I chose to do Geography as it was a subject I’d enjoyed the most throughout my time in secondary school and at A level.

What aspects of the course did you enjoy the most and why?

I enjoyed the range of topics we got to cover throughout the course. There was scope to explore topics I already knew I had an established interest in, but also to develop new interests and skills through learning modules I hadn’t studied before.

How do you think your studies have helped your career or personal development?

My studies really helped my career as we were lucky enough to have a module dedicated to career development and the chance to speak to people in various industries. Additionally, the course helped me to grow as a person and utilise the skills I’ve developed.

Describe your career progression so far, and any plans you have for the future. Are there any particular hurdles you may face?

I am currently a Planning Assistant, learning the planning system within the development industry. I will be soon starting a Master’s degree, which will take two years. After this I plan to get my chartership and become a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

Which, if any, skills and knowledge/understanding gained on your degree are most useful in your current role?
  • understanding of sustainability
  • understanding of environmental issues/solutions
  • understanding of climate change
  • understanding of travel/transport
  • report writing
  • communication skills
  • teamwork
What advice would you give to undergraduates interested in this career path or anything you wish you had known earlier?

Work experience is so crucial in this industry – a lot of employers require it and it’s also really worth doing as it gives you an idea of the career you’re going into.

In ten words, or less, how would you summarise your UON experience?

Valuable, fun, interesting, development, growth, network, friends, opportunities, achievement.
