I chose the MSc Accounting and Finance course at the University of Northampton because of its strong academic reputation, industry-relevant curriculum, and emphasis on practical application. As a Fellow member of ACCA, I wanted a master’s programme that would complement my professional qualifications, whilst deepening my expertise in key areas such as corporate governance, financial strategy, investment analysis, and sustainability reporting.

Additionally, the University’s focus on employability and career readiness was a major factor in my decision. The inclusion of research-driven learning, access to an expert faculty, and opportunities like the Employability Plus Award ensured that I would gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are applicable to real-world financial and compliance roles.

The programme also provided flexibility, allowing me to balance my academic pursuits with skills development through LinkedIn certifications and extracurricular activities. This holistic approach made UON the perfect choice for my career aspirations.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my course was the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world financial and business challenges. I particularly enjoyed modules like Global Financial Strategy, Corporate Reporting, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Governance, as they provided deep insights into risk management, regulatory compliance, and sustainable finance – areas that are critical in today’s financial landscape.

My dissertation on the impact of sustainability/Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting on firm performance was also a highlight of my academic journey. It allowed me to explore the intersection of finance, sustainability, and corporate governance, which aligns closely with my professional goals. The support from faculty members, especially during research and analysis, made the experience even more enriching.

Another standout aspect was the practical learning approach, which included case studies, discussions, and exposure to industry best practices. The faculty’s willingness to mentor and guide students, even when I joined the course as a late entry, truly made a difference.

Beyond my academic study, I thoroughly enjoyed engaging in extracurricular activities such as the Employability Plus Award, and acquiring additional LinkedIn certifications, which boosted my professional competencies.

My studies at the University of Northampton have significantly enhanced both my career and personal development. Academically, the programme deepened my expertise in corporate governance, compliance, financial strategy, and sustainability reporting, all of which are directly relevant to my current role.

On a personal level, the experience honed my critical thinking, adaptability, and research skills, particularly through my dissertation on ESG reporting. The exposure to diverse perspectives, case studies, and faculty mentorship has helped me to approach complex challenges with a more strategic mindset.

My career journey began in the financial services sector, where I developed expertise in audit, compliance, and financial regulations. I previously served as Deputy Manager Compliance Audit (Team Lead) at the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) and Assistant Manager Compliance & ICFR at Al Baraka Bank Pakistan Limited, gaining hands-on experience in regulatory compliance, risk management, and internal controls.

After completing my MSc with distinction, I began my current role, leading the Regulatory Compliance & Governance Unit at Bank Nizwa, Oman. Looking ahead, I aim to expand my expertise in ESG regulations, fintech compliance, and strategic governance.

One of the key challenges in my field is the ever-evolving regulatory landscape, requiring continuous learning and adaptability. Additionally, as an expatriate professional, navigating career growth in a new country presents its own set of challenges, but I see this as an opportunity for broader professional development.

Several skills and concepts that I gained from my degree directly contribute to my current role, including:

  • Regulatory Compliance and Corporate Governance – my studies in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Governance equipped me with a strong foundation to handle compliance, risk, and regulatory frameworks
  • Financial Analysis and Reporting – modules like Corporate Reporting and Global Financial Strategy refined my ability to analyse financial statements, assess risk, and develop strategic financial insights
  • Research and problem-solving – my dissertation sharpened my ability to analyse trends, conduct in-depth research, and apply findings to real-world financial and governance challenges
  • Adaptability and time management – managing a demanding coursework schedule, especially after joining as a late entry, strengthened my ability to quickly adapt and efficiently manage my time – an essential skill in a fast-paced compliance environment.

Alongside my role at Bank Nizwa, I currently mentor students and young professionals by sharing insights on career progression, professional certifications (ACCA), and compliance-related roles. I also actively engage on LinkedIn to discuss finance, compliance, and governance trends, helping others navigate their professional journeys. In the past, I’ve participated in employability initiatives and career-focused mentorship programmes.

Moving forward, I aim to get involved in financial literacy and compliance awareness initiatives, especially in the Islamic finance and ESG sectors, to contribute towards ethical and sustainable financial practices.

The advice I would give to undergraduates interested in this career path would be to build a strong foundation in compliance, governance, and finance, stay updated on industry trends, and actively seek internships, certifications, and mentorship opportunities to enhance your career prospects.

Overall, the blend of academic rigour, faculty support, and professional development opportunities made my time at the University of Northampton an incredibly valuable and transformative experience. It shaped my future.
