Our teaching courses are delivered by experienced and expert tutors as well as practising teachers to ensure you gain all the insight and knowledge you need to thrive.

Undergraduates can choose from our range of courses, including initial teacher training (ITT) qualifications, with the University of Northampton being recognised as one of the top 25% performing ITT providers. Postgraduates can build on their skills and expand their career options with a number of PGCE courses.

Subject Information


  • We offer various routes within education ranging from early years and special educational needs and inclusion, to the study of how people learn leadership management skills. An education degree can give you access to a wide range of careers which can include working with babies, children, young people and families.

    Dependent on the course you choose, a variety of placements are available to ensure you have the practical experience alongside your theoretical knowledge. If you are already in employment within the education sector, we have several courses that have been designed to fit around your job.

    Students on our undergraduate teaching degrees will take five placements in various areas during their time at the university, which can include SEN schools, giving them considerable teaching experience before they embark on their career as a teacher.

    Dependent on the teaching degree you choose, you will be awarded either Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS), Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an initial teacher training qualification (ITT) for teaching English as a second or foreign language.

  • The entry requirements can vary from each course. Therefore, we advise that you explore the individual specifications and course requirements for your desired subject of study, which can be found on the course page.

    Typically, it is required for applicants to hold English and Mathematics GCSEs or equivalent with at least a grade C/4, and standard application processes of interviews, recommendations, and DBS checks may apply.

    We ask that all applicants for our teacher training courses meet their chosen program’s standard entry requirements. Please read the entry requirements on each course page, as these can vary.

    Applicants must have GCSE grades of C/4 or above in English Language, Mathematics and Science before applying. Standard procedures of skill tests, interviews and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks will apply.

  • Access to our outstanding school experience library will give you the resources you need to support you in your placements, enabling you to borrow planning materials, puppets, games, large books and much more.

    The Learning Development team of the library provides opportunities to develop your academic skills, such as essay writing and critical analysis, while the Learning Technology team offers expert guidance in developing your use of technology for learning and teaching.

    Our Library and Learning Service also contributes to the university’s academic output through research and embraces the Changemaker Challenges. We work with local partners to deliver a social impact through research in key areas, including Education; Health and Wellbeing; Culture, Heritage and the Environment; and Enterprise and Innovation.
