Nursing and Midwifery


We have a long-established record of delivering high-quality learning and teaching in pre-registration and post-registration courses in nursing, midwifery, public and professional healthcare that prepare you for work across the NHS, private and volunteering sectors.

Our Adult, Children & Young People’s, Learning Disability, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, Nursing Associate and Dental Nursing courses* prepare you for a rewarding profession in your chosen area of health. We offer excellent placement opportunities with our NHS and private sector healthcare partners throughout your midwifery & nursing studies. You will be introduced to a range of care settings to familiarise you with emerging patterns of care and allow you to choose a specialist area within your field of study.

* If you are thinking of studying nursing, midwifery and many of the allied health professions, you may be eligible for a payment of at least £5,000 a year which you will not need to pay back. This is in addition to the Student Loan from the Student Loans Company. Please check the eligible courses on the NHS Business Services Authority website.

Nursing and Midwifery Degree Information


  • Our range of compulsory modules will provide Health and Nursing graduates with a good foundation in preparation for their career in Nursing or Midwifery. Our three-year single honours programmes at undergraduate level involve placements in a variety of health, education and social care settings.

  • Students partaking in our BSc Nursing degrees, as well as BSc Midwifery programme, are asked to meet our standard entry requirements for the individual courses. For our international students, we ask that the English Language requirements of IELTS 7.0 with no lower than 7.0 in Reading, Listening and Speaking as well as no lower than 6.5 in Writing for study at the undergraduate level.

    In regards to our procedure, we also ask that applicants read further about requirements, as they may vary between each course. Where you have already begun the application process, depending on your chosen subject there may be an interview required.

  • Your journey doesn’t end once you have completed your Nursing undergraduate or Masters programme at the University of Northampton.   • How long is a Nursing Degree?

    Our BSc Nursing courses take 3 years to complete. This abides by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements of a minimum 2,300 hours theory and 2,300 hours practice over 3 years.

    How to become a midwife without a Nursing Degree?

    Here at the University of Northampton, our Midwifery degree is designed to provide students with the fundamentals of a midwife and the importance of evidence-led practice and professional care.
